Aw, what a cute kid. Thanks, Marc, for putting it into words…. I, too, am struggling. Definitely hard to keep hope, but yet, hope is needed.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful memory, and eloquently expressing the conflicted emotions many of us are experiencing on this day. We love our country, but we won't the flag at our house under this current administration.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY TO ALL AMERICANS

“A republic, if you can keep it"

When Benjamin Franklin exited the Constitutional Convention in 1787, a citizen asked him what form of government the delegates had created. He famously replied: "A republic, if you can keep it". This means self-governance relies entirely on the active, informed involvement of the people to survive. “We have it in our power to begin the world over again.” ― Thomas Paine “When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon.” ― Thomas Paine “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” ― Thomas Paine, The American Crisis “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow.” ― Thomas Paine, The American Crisis

So very well said Marc, as usual. Thank you. I too want my country and flag back.

So well done. My flag is out today because it is still our July 4th. I refuse to cede it to the grifters and their followers.

I have brought our flag to No Kings Protests in Louisville in order to make this very point. I want US to take back our flag and its meaning. I try to start chants "Whose flag? Our flag!" People join in but many don't because I can see in their eyes that they have mixed feelings about our flag. I understand- so do I. But at this point in my 76-year-old life, I want to work hard in our community so that many more of us can wave our flag proudly again. I refuse to cede our nation and its flag to bigots and monsters.
